Frequently Asked Questions
What is mask fit testing?
- A mask fit test verifies that a respirator or face mask forms a proper seal on an individual’s face so airborne contaminants cannot bypass the filter. Fit testing ensures the chosen model and size of respirator (N95, half-face, full-face) fits the wearer and meets occupational safety standards.
What’s the difference between qualitative and quantitative fit testing?
- Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) is a pass/fail method that relies on the wearer’s sensory detection (taste, smell, or irritation) of a test agent (e.g., saccharin, Bitrex, isoamyl acetate). Quantitative fit testing (QNFT) uses instruments to measure the actual amount of leakage into the respirator and produces a numerical fit factor. QLFT is subjective and suited for tight-fitting negative-pressure respirators; QNFT is objective and required when a numeric fit factor is needed.
Which respirators require fit testing?
- Most workplace respirators that rely on a tight seal require fit testing, including N95 filtering facepiece respirators, elastomeric half-face and full-face respirators, and masks that require fit testing, PAPR does not require fit testing but SCBA does. Regulatory bodies (e.g., OSHA) require fit testing for employees using tight-fitting respirators as part of a respiratory protection program.
How often should fit testing be performed?
- A qualitative fit test usually takes 7-10 minutes per person (including questionnaire and training). A quantitative fit test generally takes 10-12 minutes depending on the equipment, protocols, and number of exercises performed.
Who can perform fit testing and restorative cleaning?
- Fit testing should be performed by trained, competent personnel—occupational health staff, certified respirator program managers, or accredited fit test providers. Restorative cleaning should be done by trained technicians following manufacturer guidance and infection-control standards; some organizations outsource to specialized service providers.
Are there regulatory standards for fit testing and respirator cleaning?
- Yes, Canada has regulatory standards for respirator fit testing and cleaning, primarily guided by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z94.4-18 (Selection, Use and Care of Respirators), which is referenced in provincial Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) acts.
